Good Reads: Scents and Sensibility

Scents and Sensibility (A Chet and Bernie Mystery #8)Scents and Sensibility by Spencer Quinn
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Scents and Sensibility is the eighth book in the Chet and Bernie mystery series. It is a very well written and professionally edited full length novel.

Chet and Bernie are concerned about their elderly next door neighbors and set out to find the couples' son. A son that has just spent fifteen years in jail for kidnapping. What seems like a straight forward case soon turns into a murder and police corruption investigation.

I love Chet's, the dog, narration of the plot with his free form way of thinking. Bernie is struggling in this story and I deeply identified with his need to help the weak and helpless people in this world.

Scents and Sensibility is a fun and poignant read. I highly recommend this entire series.

Goodreads: Paw and Order

Paw and Order (A Chet and Bernie Mystery #7)Paw and Order by Spencer Quinn
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Paw and Order is the seventh book in the Chet and Bernie mystery series. It is extremely well written and professionally edited.

Chet and Bernie leave Louisiana, headed toward Washington DC to reconnect with Bernie's love interest, Suzie, a reporter. Once in Washington they become embroiled in a murder mystery involving local police, federal agents and Russian sleeper agents.

As usual, Chet is a wonderful narrator of his and Bernie's detective work. I love how his dog eye view is described. Bernie is lovable and competent in his slightly bumbling, but endearing way.

The only problem I had with this book is with Suzie and Bernie's romance. Suzie comes off as judgmental and as operating under a double standard.

Paw and Order can be read as a standalone, but I suggest reading the whole series to fully enjoy the novels. This series is a joy and I strongly recommend it.

Good Reads: Suspect

SuspectSuspect by Robert Crais
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

What a great police thriller and a poignant love story between a police officer and his K-9. Intelligently written and emotionally engaging; I couldn't put this book down.

The first chapter had me in tears (view spoiler)[ when Maggie the dog tells about the death of her Marine handler and the cause of her PTSD. Then the next chapter describes how the police officer, Scott, developed PTSD after the death of his partner in a shootout. (hide spoiler)] The two join as partners after they heal physically and magic happens as they emotionally heal together.

If you love dogs and police dramas, you will love this book.
